Pedalai belongs to the family of Jack and anjili fruit of Kerala. Scientifically called as ' Artocarpus sericarpus'. Pedalai resembles a big rambutan in appearance.Its outer skin is hairy and soft. Pedalai fruit marks it's origin from Borneo and Philippines. Pedalai can be grown in tropical climate areas with monsoon rainfall.Fully ripened pedalai fruit has an orange coloured outer skin which can be easily removed with hands. The inside yummy flesh appears in white colour.Taste resembles that of ordinary anjili fruit of Kerala, but more yummy than any other artocarpus.
The seeds of pedalai fruit can be roasted and eaten like peanut butter nuts.Pedalai resembles that of another white variety anjili called 'Marang', but lacks that unpleasant odour of marang fruit. Pedalai is very aromatic as well.Budded Pedalai plants will fruit in 4 years duration.
