The place of origin of the Chowghat Orange Dwarf (COD), a short-statured coconut variety, is the Chavakkad region in the Thrissur district. This variety is also known among farmers as "Chenthengu" and "Gaurigathram." It is the most suitable variety for tender coconuts. In a comparative study of 44 coconut varieties conducted at the CPCRI in Kasaragod, COD was identified as the one with the highest-quality tender coconut water. Its fronds and coconuts have an attractive orange color. On average, this variety yields 350 ml of water per tender coconut. The nutritional value of 100 ml of its water includes 7 grams of sugar, 1.8 milligrams of amino acids, 20 ppm of sodium, and 2,000 ppm of potassium, making it an excellent drink for relieving fatigue. In Kerala, this variety is mainly used for home consumption and as an ornamental plant. However, in regions like Pollachi in Tamil Nadu, there are large plantations where it is commercially grown for tender coconuts. It starts bearing fruit within 3-4 years of planting. In plantations with proper care, including irrigation, the annual yield per palm ranges from 112 to 192 coconuts. The quality of its copra is poor. This variety produces medium-sized, round coconuts. In addition to being used for tender coconuts, it is also utilized for producing hybrid varieties like "Kerasankara" and "Chandrasankara," as well as for ornamental purposes in home gardens.
