Coconut seedlings produced from coconuts in the hilly villages of Kuttiyadi and its surrounding areas in the Kozhikode district are known for their high yield and superior disease resistance. This is why there is always a high demand for Kuttiyadi coconut seedlings across Kerala.Compared to other coconuts, Kuttiyadi coconuts yield up to 80% coconut oil from their copra. The demand for Kuttiyadi coconuts is high even in other states because one quintal of dried coconuts can produce 16 to 17 kilograms of ball copra. Kuttiyadi coconuts are also preferred for producing neera, virgin coconut oil, neera sugar, chocolates, jam, vinegar, and jaggery. This variety has a long-fruiting life, so it takes slightly longer to start yielding. A planted sapling will produce flower clusters in five years and will be full of coconuts in seven years. With proper irrigation and fertilization, a single palm can yield up to 150 coconuts per year. It is best to apply fertilizer half a meter away from the palm. For the best yield, fertilizing every three or four months is better than doing it just once a year.
